CADSTAR Gets a Makeover in Version 12.0

The latest version of CADSTAR from Zuken features a dramatic makeover for ease of use, along with new technology for design reuse and managing obsolescence. For migrating users, version 12.0 also helps to protect and retain historical IP with the addition of a comprehensive integrated migration tool supporting competitive design data.

"CADSTAR 12.0 sees the start of a massive makeover which will take place over the next few years to widen the appeal and usability for both infrequent and regular users. By incorporating more advanced Microsoft Windows compliant GUIs including dockable windows and tabbed design windows, users will be able to set CADSTAR up more quickly and easily than ever before," said Jeroen Leinders CADSTAR distribution manager.

The initial phase of this makeover implemented in version 12.0 includes a 'start page' created to help users organize their workflow, by displaying customer set preferences including recent workspaces and design files, plus online links for support, news and events. The customizable capabilities of this new GUI provide personal screen viewing preferences and for the more novice user, a schematic start-up wizard has been added that leads them, step-by-step, through the design set-up process.

Enhancements have been added that make the reuse of design data a smoother and more efficient process. Reuse blocks can be defined by saving sections from an existing schematic or PCB design. These blocks can then be included and reused in new designs, increasing product quality and reducing overall design cycle time.

Users can now carry out design migration directly within CADSTAR, without the requirement for any additional add-on tools. This 'one-click' migration option allows users to use design data from competitive design data within CADSTAR. The CADSTAR design migration tool enables organizations to transition to this more advanced PCB design environment while protecting historical investment and IP for future reuse and reference.

Managing out of stock or obsolete components can be very time consuming and costly. With the new Parts Acceptance Attribute users will automatically be notified when a component has become obsolete. When reloading a design from the library, information will be provided stating which component is to be replaced, with a suggested alternative part.

The enhanced viewing of attribute data is now possible with a single dialog that can be customized to display specific reports, which can then be imported into Microsoft Excel. CADSTAR 12.0 will be available at the end of November 2009.
